Iconography

A Panchaloha bronze representation of Ayyanar, the guardian deity associated with Tamil village traditions and their boundaries. Ayyanar is depicted riding an elephant, accompanied by a mahout seated behind him, forming a distinctive processional composition.

The iconographic treatment emphasizes Ayyanar’s dynamic seated posture and the narrative relationship between deity, mount, and attendant. Ayyanar is seated in utkutikasana upon the elephant, with a commanding presence with one knee raised and the other leg pendant, and is adorned with a tall headdress- jatabhara, layered haras, armlets, wrist ornaments, waist ornaments, and a pleated lower garment. The elephant is richly ornamented across the head and body and carries a cluster of bananas in its trunk, adding a distinctive narrative detail. A mahout seated behind Ayyanar completes the processional composition, while the modelling of the elephant and its trappings reinforces the sculptural focus on movement and ornament.

Crafted in panchaloha bronze using the traditional lost-wax casting process, this sculptural narrative draws inspiration from South Indian temple and relief traditions, where episode from folklore is translated into compact iconographic composition in bronze.

Part of the Stories in Bronze collection, this series explores narrative episodes from Indian sacred and literary traditions through sculptural form. Each composition focuses on gesture, interaction, posture, and iconographic detail to capture a specific moment in the narrative. Conceived as collectible bronze artworks, these icons are suited for elevated home décor, curated interior spaces, premium gifting, and collectors of South Indian bronze sculpture and narrative art traditions.
